This is the exact route from an ordinary car licence to paid lorry driving in the UK, in the order that wastes no time. It was checked against GOV.UK in July 2026. Train with HGV Training Hub and the medical, theory test and CPC case-study fees are on us — call 01634 907 229.
A 20-minute check with a doctor: eyesight, blood pressure, heart and general health. It is not a fitness test — nearly everyone passes. The doctor completes the medical and vision sections of your D4 form during the appointment. Bring your photocard licence, your glasses or contact lenses if you wear them, and a list of any medications. A completed D4 is only valid for 4 months, so don't sit on it. Train with us and the medical is free — we book the appointment for you at a clinic near you.
The D2 is DVLA's free application form for a provisional lorry (Category C) or bus (Category D) entitlement. Your D2, the doctor-completed D4 and your photocard licence all post together in one envelope to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BR. There is no fee, and the turnaround is usually about 3 weeks. The most common delay in the whole journey is an envelope missing one of the three items.
100 questions in 115 minutes, pass mark 85. Topics include drivers' hours and rest breaks, tachographs, walkaround checks and defect reporting, air brakes, load security and vulnerable road users. Book only through the official gov.uk service — third-party booking sites charge extra for nothing. Train with us and the fee is covered: we book it for you on days that suit.
19 video clips with 20 scorable hazards, pass mark 67 out of 100. You click as a developing hazard emerges — click too early or in patterns and the clip scores zero. Usually sat in the same visit as Part 1a. A theory pass is valid for 2 years: your practical test must be passed inside that window.
7 real-life scenarios with around 50 questions, pass mark 40 out of 50. It tests judgement in situations a professional driver actually meets — hours, loading, defects, emergencies. Not needed if you only want the 7.5-tonne C1 licence for ambulance or removals work. Fee on us when you train with us.
Typically 5 days one-to-one in a real full-size truck — at our Kent centre that means modern DAF and Scania vehicles with DVSA-registered instructors, never simulators or cut-down mini lorries.
Module 3a is the off-road exercises (reversing, coupling where relevant); Module 3b is the on-road drive. The DVSA fee for 3b is £115 on weekdays or £141 on evenings and weekends. Category C, C+E and D routes also sit Module 4, the CPC practical demonstration. We test from Gillingham on the same roads you train on.
With licence and driver CPC in hand you can work. Class 2 (rigid) drivers typically start around £40k+, Class 1 (artic) drivers £50k+, PCV (bus and coach) £42k+ in the South East. We hold direct hiring lines with 50+ regional operators and start interview matching before you even sit your test.
1) Posting the D2 without the D4 or the photocard — the envelope needs all three. 2) Leaving the medical with an unsigned D4 section. 3) Booking theory on a third-party site and paying a markup for nothing. 4) Letting the 2-year theory clock run down before the practical. 5) Waiting for one step to finish before preparing the next — revision can start on day one.
With HGV Training Hub: D4 medical £0 (on us), D2 provisional £0 (DVLA charges nothing), theory 1a + 1b £0 (on us), CPC case studies £0 (on us), practical test £115–£141 (DVSA's own fee). Course prices are on our transparent pricing page — no hidden extras, a £299 deposit secures your start date, and no honest school ever promises a "guaranteed pass".
