HGV Skills Bootcamps in 2026: what they cover and how to find one

An HGV Skills Bootcamp is a free, government-funded lorry driving course for adults in England, lasting up to 16 weeks. In 2026 the catch is geography: funding is now handed out area by area, so whether you can join one depends on where you live.

What a Skills Bootcamp is

Skills Bootcamps in HGV driving are free courses for people new to lorry driving or returning to it. They last up to 16 weeks, and the local specification we have read sets a minimum of 60 guided learning hours. Some providers also run bootcamps for drivers who already hold a licence, such as dangerous goods courses or training to tow heavier trailers.

At the end, the government's Skills for Careers site says every learner is promised a job interview with an employer. More on what that does and does not mean below.

What changed for 2026/27

Responsibility for adult skills moved from the Department for Education to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in September 2025, and bootcamps are no longer bought through one national contract. On 1 June 2026 DWP published £46.4m of 2026/27 allocations, including £12m set aside for construction, across 28 local areas, and named HGV driving as an example of a priority sector.

Mayoral authorities fund bootcamps from their own integrated settlements instead. London, for example, has £11.757m a year from 2026/27 to 2028/29. The practical result is that your county council or combined authority decides which courses run, and an HGV bootcamp in one county tells you nothing about the next.

Who can join

What a bootcamp pays for

For the learner the course is free. GOV.UK says it covers your provisional licence including the medical, each of the four Driver CPC tests and one re-sit per test.

Two things are worth asking before you start. First, what happens if you need a second re-sit, because GOV.UK only says one re-sit per test is covered. Second, which licence you finish with. We could not confirm that every area funds Category C+E (Class 1), and many free offers stop at Category C (Class 2).

If your employer puts you on one

Independent and self-employed learners are fully funded. When an employer uses a bootcamp to train its own staff, it pays a share. Be careful with the figures here: the 10% for employers with fewer than 250 staff and 30% for larger ones come from a local 2026/27 specification (Staffordshire County Council's), and the government's employer schemes page gives the same split. We found no national statement that fixes those rates for 2026/27, so your area's rules may differ.

Employers pay nothing to recruit a bootcamp graduate. If an employer asks you to sign a repayment clause for training it paid for, the Court of Appeal ruled in 2026 that such a clause must reflect a genuine cost and be proportionate.

The interview is not a job offer

Bootcamps promise a job interview with an employer at the end, and the local specification we read requires independent learners to move on to one. That is genuinely useful, because it puts you in front of someone hiring. But an interview is a chance at a job, not an offer of one.

Ask the provider which employers interview their learners, for which roles, and whether those roles need the licence category the bootcamp gives you.

How to find an HGV bootcamp

You apply to the training provider, not to the government. GOV.UK links to the National Careers Service course search: search for HGV and filter by Skills Bootcamp. On 30 October 2026 it returned 47 HGV-related courses, mostly with flexible start dates and a listed cost of £0.00, in places as far apart as Grays, Arundel, Luton, Nottingham, North Shields and Carlisle.

Check each course is funded for your address before you apply. The older GOV.UK Find a Skills Bootcamp regional pages now redirect elsewhere, so ignore links to them.

Common questions

What is an HGV Skills Bootcamp?

A free, government-funded HGV driving course in England lasting up to 16 weeks, for adults new to lorry driving or returning to it. It covers your provisional licence including the medical, all four Driver CPC tests and one re-sit per test, and ends with a job interview with an employer.

Are HGV Skills Bootcamps still running in 2026?

Yes, but not as one national scheme. From 2026/27 DWP funds them through local areas, with £46.4m allocated to 28 areas on 1 June 2026, and mayoral authorities fund their own. Whether an HGV bootcamp is running depends on where you live, so check the National Careers Service search.

Who is eligible for an HGV bootcamp?

Adults aged 19 or over with a full car licence who live in the funding area, meet the Adult Skills Fund residency rules and have the right to work in the UK. You can be employed, unemployed or self-employed. You can do one bootcamp per financial year, and providers can add criteria of their own.

Will an HGV bootcamp get me a job?

It gets you a job interview with an employer at the end, which is useful, but an interview is not a job offer. Ask the provider which employers take part, what roles they are hiring for, and whether those roles need the licence category the bootcamp gives you.

How much does an employer pay for an HGV bootcamp?

Nothing to recruit a bootcamp graduate. To train its own staff, a local 2026/27 specification and the government's employer schemes page both give 10% for employers with fewer than 250 staff and 30% for larger ones. We found no national 2026/27 rule fixing those rates, so check with your local provider.

Can I do a Class 1 (C+E) bootcamp?

Possibly, depending on your area. Some providers run upgrade bootcamps, and London's finder lists a co-funded course covering Category C or C+E, but we could not confirm that every area funds C+E. Many free courses stop at Category C (Class 2), so check before you apply.

Is there an HGV bootcamp in Hertfordshire?

Not on the current list. Hertfordshire has £1.9m of bootcamp funding for 2026/27, but no HGV or bus course appeared on its course page when we checked on 30 October 2026. Hertfordshire residents can still look at the Adult Skills Fund and Jobcentre routes.
