Course Overview & local Relevance

Our customized HGV Class 2 curriculum provides intensive, DVSA-aligned practical training. This local program integrates critical connection to London Gateway and the Tilbury marine freight hubs, offering students genuine local geographical advantages and immediate integration into nearby supply corridors.

Essex is a massive logistical artery for the UK. With the major container ports of Tilbury and London Gateway, alongside the M25 and A12 corridors, the demand for Class 1 and Class 2 drivers is exceptional.

The Class 2 (Category C) licence is the backbone of local haulage. Whether you are delivering to supermarkets, construction sites, or retail stores, the Class 2 qualification offers steady work, competitive pay, and the benefit of being home every night. Our training uses modern automatic vehicles, ensuring you learn on the same technology used by the UK's leading fleets.

We support Class 2 learners across Chelmsford, Basildon, Thurrock, Colchester, Southend-on-Sea, Harlow and the wider South East area.

Class 2 Training in Essex — FAQs

Q: Do I arrange my own medical?

No. As part of your enrollment, our concierge team books your mandatory DVLA D4 medical exam with a partnered physician local to your area in Essex.

Q: What driving jobs are available in Essex?

Essex is home to two of the UK's largest ports (Tilbury and London Gateway) and massive Amazon fulfillment centres. The demand for both Class 1 container drivers and Class 2 delivery drivers is extremely high.

Q: Do you offer paramedic C1 training in Essex?

Yes, we facilitate fast-track C1 (7.5 Tonne) training tailored for East of England Ambulance Service applicants.

Q: What exactly is a Class 2 (Category C) vehicle?

A Class 2 vehicle is a "rigid" truck where the cab and the trailer are permanently fixed together. This includes vehicles like fire engines, bin lorries, tipper trucks, and large box vans used for store deliveries.

Q: Can I drive an articulated lorry with this licence?

No. To drive an articulated lorry (where the trailer pivots behind the cab), you need a Class 1 (C+E) licence. However, getting your Class 2 is an excellent stepping stone, and you can easily upgrade to Class 1 later in your career.

Q: How much can I earn as a Class 2 driver?

Newly qualified Class 2 drivers typically start on £30,000 to £35,000 per year. Because these roles often involve local routes and multi-drop deliveries, the hours are usually very regular, allowing you to be home every evening.

Q: Do I need a Driver CPC for Class 2?

Yes. If you are driving an HGV for commercial purposes (to earn money), the Driver CPC is a legal requirement. Our training packages include full preparation for your Initial CPC modules.

Q: Will I learn in a manual or automatic truck?

You will train and test in a modern automatic rigid truck. Due to DVLA rule changes, passing in an automatic still gives you the legal entitlement to drive manual Class 2 vehicles.

Q: How long does the training take?

From your initial medical to passing your practical test, the process usually takes 5 to 7 weeks. The longest part of the process is simply waiting for the DVLA to return your provisional licence.

Class 2 (Rigid) in Essex: the local picture

Class 2 covers rigid distribution across south Essex — the A13 corridor, Basildon, Thurrock and the estates around the M25. It is the quicker and cheaper licence, and no further theory is needed if you upgrade to artic later.

Where you take the test

Thurrock LGV. Essex candidates would normally look at Thurrock LGV test centre, just off the M25 near Purfleet. Where the vehicle and instructor availability sits with us in Kent, the Dartford Crossing puts our Medway centres within easy reach.

Getting to us from Essex

Over the Dartford Crossing and east on the A2 — from Thurrock, our Medway centres are about 25 miles.

The roads you will be working

M25 junctions 30 and 31, the A13 into London, the A12 north-east, and the A127 to Southend.

Who is hiring near Essex

London Gateway and the Port of Tilbury sit on the Essex bank of the Thames, and the A13 and M25 between them carry some of the heaviest container traffic in the country.

What Essex learners get

How far is the test centre from Essex?

Your practical is at Thurrock LGV. Over the Dartford Crossing and east on the A2 — from Thurrock, our Medway centres are about 25 miles. We book the test alongside your training dates, so you are not chasing DVSA slots yourself.

Do you cover my part of South East?

Learners come to us from Chelmsford, Basildon, Thurrock, Colchester, Southend-on-Sea, Harlow, Braintree, Brentwood. If you are just outside that list, call 01634 907 229 and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right school for you.

Where you sit the theory test

Ilford, Chelmsford or Southend-on-Sea. Essex is unusually well served for theory, with centres at Ilford, Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea. The lorry practical is the harder booking — Thurrock is the local centre, and our own vehicles and instructors sit across the Dartford Crossing in Kent.

Essex is a massive logistical artery for the UK. With the major container ports of Tilbury and London Gateway, alongside the M25 and A12 corridors, the demand for Class 1 and Class 2 drivers is exceptional. We do not run an Essex depot and we will not pretend to. What we do run is a full training centre in Kent with our own vehicles and DVSA-registered instructors, and a steady stream of Essex learners who make the trip because the training is better. Whether you are based in Chelmsford, Colchester, or the Thurrock logistics parks, we manage your entire journey from local medical booking to final job placement.
