Course Overview & local Relevance

Your Class 2 training is one-to-one in a full-size vehicle and planned around your DVSA test. For learners in Bedfordshire, we confirm the training centre and test centre before you book, and every DVSA test fee is included in the price.

Bedfordshire sits across the M1 between junctions 10 and 13, with the A1 running past Biggleswade and Sandy and the A6 and A421 crossing at Bedford. That mix of roads has drawn big distribution sites: Co-op opened a 661,000 sq ft regional distribution centre at Biggleswade in 2022, and Asda, Argos and Sainsbury's have distribution centres at Kempston.

The Class 2 (Category C) licence is the backbone of local haulage. Whether you are delivering to supermarkets, construction sites, or retail stores, the Class 2 qualification offers steady work, competitive pay, and the benefit of being home every night. Our training uses modern automatic vehicles, ensuring you learn on the same technology used by the UK's leading fleets.

We support Class 2 learners across Luton, Bedford, Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard, Houghton Regis, Kempston and the wider Bedfordshire area.

Class 2 Training in Bedfordshire - FAQs

Q: Can I take a lorry test at the Bedford or Luton test centre?

No. The DVSA centres in Bedford and Luton do not test lorries or buses, and neither do Bletchley or Aylesbury nearby. Your Class 1, Class 2, C1 or bus practical is booked at a centre that tests large vehicles, and we confirm which one in writing at booking.

Q: Is there funding for lorry or bus training in Bedfordshire?

Central Bedfordshire Council offers free Category D bus licence training to Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire and Luton residents who hold a car licence, delivered by a separate provider. Central Bedfordshire and Bedford also share £1.5m of Skills Bootcamp funding for 2026/27 covering transport and logistics, though an HGV course is not confirmed. See our funding page.

Q: What does lorry or bus training cost in Bedfordshire?

Course prices are on our pricing page, and DVSA test fees are included. Before you pay anything we confirm the full all-in price in writing, along with your training centre, test centre and dates, whether you live in Luton, Bedford or a village off the A1.

Q: What exactly is a Class 2 (Category C) vehicle?

A Class 2 vehicle is a "rigid" truck where the cab and the trailer are permanently fixed together. This includes vehicles like fire engines, bin lorries, tipper trucks, and large box vans used for store deliveries.

Q: Can I drive an articulated lorry with this licence?

No. To drive an articulated lorry (where the trailer pivots behind the cab), you need a Class 1 (C+E) licence. However, getting your Class 2 is an excellent stepping stone, and you can easily upgrade to Class 1 later in your career.

Q: How much can I earn as a Class 2 driver?

Newly qualified Class 2 drivers typically start on £30,000 to £35,000 per year. Because these roles often involve local routes and multi-drop deliveries, the hours are usually very regular, allowing you to be home every evening.

Q: Do I need a Driver CPC for Class 2?

Yes. If you are driving an HGV for commercial purposes (to earn money), the Driver CPC is a legal requirement. Our training packages include full preparation for your Initial CPC modules.

Q: Will I learn in a manual or automatic truck?

You will train and test in a modern automatic rigid truck. Due to DVLA rule changes, passing in an automatic still gives you the legal entitlement to drive manual Class 2 vehicles.

Q: How long does the training take?

From your initial medical to passing your practical test, the process usually takes 5 to 7 weeks. The longest part of the process is simply waiting for the DVLA to return your provisional licence.
