Class 2 Training in Bristol - FAQs

Q: What lorry work is there around Bristol?

The Port of Bristol runs Avonmouth and Royal Portbury docks, with the M5 serving Avonmouth. Waitrose plans its first south-west distribution centre at Avonmouth, run by DHL Supply Chain and due to open in early 2027, with 80 driver roles announced. Once you qualify, we offer introductions to our employer network.

Q: Is there funded HGV training for Bristol residents?

It depends on where you live and your circumstances. Skills Bootcamps are run by local areas in 2026/27, so what is open to Bristol residents can change, and some routes are free for eligible adults. Our funding page explains each option.

Q: How much does HGV training cost in Bristol?

Course prices are on our pricing page. For training in the Bristol area, your full all-in price, with DVSA test fees included, is confirmed in writing together with your school, test centre and dates before you pay. On the Full Package we also book your D4 medical at an approved clinic near your home.

Q: What exactly is a Class 2 (Category C) vehicle?

A Class 2 vehicle is a "rigid" truck where the cab and the trailer are permanently fixed together. This includes vehicles like fire engines, bin lorries, tipper trucks, and large box vans used for store deliveries.

Q: Can I drive an articulated lorry with this licence?

No. To drive an articulated lorry (where the trailer pivots behind the cab), you need a Class 1 (C+E) licence. However, getting your Class 2 is an excellent stepping stone, and you can easily upgrade to Class 1 later in your career.

Q: How much can I earn as a Class 2 driver?

Newly qualified Class 2 drivers typically start on £30,000 to £35,000 per year. Because these roles often involve local routes and multi-drop deliveries, the hours are usually very regular, allowing you to be home every evening.

Q: Do I need a Driver CPC for Class 2?

Yes. If you are driving an HGV for commercial purposes (to earn money), the Driver CPC is a legal requirement. Our training packages include full preparation for your Initial CPC modules.

Q: Will I learn in a manual or automatic truck?

You will train and test in a modern automatic rigid truck. Due to DVLA rule changes, passing in an automatic still gives you the legal entitlement to drive manual Class 2 vehicles.

Q: How long does the training take?

From your initial medical to passing your practical test, the process usually takes 5 to 7 weeks. The longest part of the process is simply waiting for the DVLA to return your provisional licence.
