The A14's Cambridge to Huntingdon upgrade fully opened in May 2020, and to the west National Highways is building 10 miles of new A428 dual carriageway between the Black Cat junction and Caxton Gibbet, on track to open in spring 2027.

Whether you want to work in public transport, school bus services, or private luxury coach tours, our PCV (Passenger Carrying Vehicle) course provides everything you need. PCV Bus Training in Cambridge - FAQs

Q: Where will I train if I live in Cambridge?

We arrange one-to-one training in a full-size vehicle with an approved partner school near you, rather than at our Kent centre. We name the school and instructor, and confirm the test centre, your dates and the full all-in price in writing, before you pay anything.

Q: What driving work is there around Cambridge?

The A14 carries lorry traffic between the Port of Felixstowe and the Midlands, and west of the city National Highways is building 10 miles of new A428 dual carriageway, due to open in spring 2027. Stagecoach and Whippet run the buses on the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway. Once you qualify, we offer introductions to our employer network.

Q: Is there free HGV training for Cambridge residents?

Skills Bootcamps, which are free for eligible adults aged 19 and over with a car licence, are now funded locally, so what is open to you depends on where you live and the funding year. A Level 2 driving qualification can also be free if you are unemployed or on a lower income. Our funding page explains each route.

Q: What is the difference between a Category D and D1 licence?

Category D1 restricts you to driving minibuses (up to 16 passengers). A full Category D licence is completely unrestricted, allowing you to drive any size bus, coach, or bendy-bus.

Q: Do I need a special medical for a bus licence?

You need the exact same D4 medical as an HGV driver. We handle the booking for you with an approved local physician.

Q: Can I drive a manual bus if I pass in an automatic?

Yes, provided you already hold a manual car licence (Category B). If you pass your PCV test in an automatic bus, you are still legally allowed to drive manual buses.

Q: What kind of jobs can I get with a PCV licence?

You can work for local public transport networks (like Arriva or Stagecoach), private luxury coach hire companies, airport transfer services, or school transit providers.

Q: Is the Driver CPC required for driving a bus?

Yes, anyone driving a bus or coach professionally must hold a valid Driver CPC. We include full preparation for your Initial CPC in your training.

Q: How long is the training?

The timeline is similar to HGVs: typically 5 to 7 weeks from your initial medical to your final practical test, depending heavily on DVLA processing times.
