Course Overview & local Relevance

Your Class 2 training is one-to-one in a full-size vehicle and planned around your DVSA test. For learners in Cambridge, we confirm the training centre and test centre before you book, and every DVSA test fee is included in the price.

Cambridge sits where the M11 ends at the Girton Interchange with the A14, the road that carries lorry traffic between the Port of Felixstowe and the Midlands. The A14's Cambridge to Huntingdon upgrade fully opened in May 2020, and to the west National Highways is building 10 miles of new A428 dual carriageway between the Black Cat junction and Caxton Gibbet, on track to open in spring 2027.

The Class 2 (Category C) licence is the backbone of local haulage. Whether you are delivering to supermarkets, construction sites, or retail stores, the Class 2 qualification offers steady work, competitive pay, and the benefit of being home every night. Our training uses modern automatic vehicles, ensuring you learn on the same technology used by the UK's leading fleets.

We support Class 2 learners across Chesterton, Cherry Hinton, Trumpington, Histon, Impington, Girton and the wider Cambridgeshire area.

Class 2 Training in Cambridge - FAQs

Q: What driving work is there around Cambridge?

The A14 carries lorry traffic between the Port of Felixstowe and the Midlands, and west of the city National Highways is building 10 miles of new A428 dual carriageway, due to open in spring 2027. Stagecoach and Whippet run the buses on the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway. Once you qualify, we offer introductions to our employer network.

Q: Is there free HGV training for Cambridge residents?

Skills Bootcamps, which are free for eligible adults aged 19 and over with a car licence, are now funded locally, so what is open to you depends on where you live and the funding year. A Level 2 driving qualification can also be free if you are unemployed or on a lower income. Our funding page explains each route.

Q: What does HGV training cost in Cambridge?

See our pricing page for what each course includes. Cambridge training is arranged with a partner school near you, so we confirm your full all-in price in writing, with DVSA test fees included, before you pay anything. On the Full Package we also book your D4 medical at an approved clinic near your home.

Q: What exactly is a Class 2 (Category C) vehicle?

A Class 2 vehicle is a "rigid" truck where the cab and the trailer are permanently fixed together. This includes vehicles like fire engines, bin lorries, tipper trucks, and large box vans used for store deliveries.

Q: Can I drive an articulated lorry with this licence?

No. To drive an articulated lorry (where the trailer pivots behind the cab), you need a Class 1 (C+E) licence. However, getting your Class 2 is an excellent stepping stone, and you can easily upgrade to Class 1 later in your career.

Q: How much can I earn as a Class 2 driver?

Newly qualified Class 2 drivers typically start on £30,000 to £35,000 per year. Because these roles often involve local routes and multi-drop deliveries, the hours are usually very regular, allowing you to be home every evening.

Q: Do I need a Driver CPC for Class 2?

Yes. If you are driving an HGV for commercial purposes (to earn money), the Driver CPC is a legal requirement. Our training packages include full preparation for your Initial CPC modules.

Q: Will I learn in a manual or automatic truck?

You will train and test in a modern automatic rigid truck. Due to DVLA rule changes, passing in an automatic still gives you the legal entitlement to drive manual Class 2 vehicles.

Q: How long does the training take?

From your initial medical to passing your practical test, the process usually takes 5 to 7 weeks. The longest part of the process is simply waiting for the DVLA to return your provisional licence.
