Course Overview & local Relevance

Your Class 2 training is one-to-one in a full-size vehicle and planned around your DVSA test. For learners in Hertfordshire, we confirm the training centre and test centre before you book, and every DVSA test fee is included in the price.

Hertfordshire is crossed by the M1, M25, A1(M), M11 and A41, with the A414 running east to west between Hemel Hempstead, Hatfield and Hertford. Tesco's head office is at Shire Park in Welwyn Garden City, and near St Albans a contract of about £200m was awarded in September 2025 to build SEGRO's Radlett rail freight interchange.

The Class 2 (Category C) licence is the backbone of local haulage. Whether you are delivering to supermarkets, construction sites, or retail stores, the Class 2 qualification offers steady work, competitive pay, and the benefit of being home every night. Our training uses modern automatic vehicles, ensuring you learn on the same technology used by the UK's leading fleets.

We support Class 2 learners across Watford, St Albans, Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage, Hertford, Welwyn Garden City and the wider Hertfordshire area.

Class 2 Training in Hertfordshire - FAQs

Q: What kind of driving work is there in Hertfordshire?

The county sits on the M1, M25 and A1(M), with Stansted and Luton airports both within 10 miles of its border. Tesco's head office is in Welwyn Garden City, and the county council coordinates local buses through the Intalink partnership. When you pass, we offer introductions to our employer network.

Q: Is there funded HGV training in Hertfordshire?

Hertfordshire County Council runs Skills Bootcamps, but when we checked in October 2026 its list had no HGV or bus course. Bootcamp funding is now set locally, so what you can get depends on where you live. Our funding page covers the other routes.

Q: How much does HGV training cost in Hertfordshire?

Course prices are on our pricing page and include your DVSA test fees. Before you pay anything, we send your full all-in price in writing, together with your training centre, test centre and dates.

Q: What exactly is a Class 2 (Category C) vehicle?

A Class 2 vehicle is a "rigid" truck where the cab and the trailer are permanently fixed together. This includes vehicles like fire engines, bin lorries, tipper trucks, and large box vans used for store deliveries.

Q: Can I drive an articulated lorry with this licence?

No. To drive an articulated lorry (where the trailer pivots behind the cab), you need a Class 1 (C+E) licence. However, getting your Class 2 is an excellent stepping stone, and you can easily upgrade to Class 1 later in your career.

Q: How much can I earn as a Class 2 driver?

Newly qualified Class 2 drivers typically start on £30,000 to £35,000 per year. Because these roles often involve local routes and multi-drop deliveries, the hours are usually very regular, allowing you to be home every evening.

Q: Do I need a Driver CPC for Class 2?

Yes. If you are driving an HGV for commercial purposes (to earn money), the Driver CPC is a legal requirement. Our training packages include full preparation for your Initial CPC modules.

Q: Will I learn in a manual or automatic truck?

You will train and test in a modern automatic rigid truck. Due to DVLA rule changes, passing in an automatic still gives you the legal entitlement to drive manual Class 2 vehicles.

Q: How long does the training take?

From your initial medical to passing your practical test, the process usually takes 5 to 7 weeks. The longest part of the process is simply waiting for the DVLA to return your provisional licence.
