PCV Bus Training in Reading - FAQs

Q: Where will I train if I live in Reading?

We arrange one-to-one training in a full-size vehicle with an approved partner school near you, so you will not need to travel to our Kent centre. We name the school and instructor, and confirm the test centre, dates and full all-in price in writing, before you pay anything.

Q: What driving work is there around Reading?

Tesco runs a 900,000 sq ft distribution centre in Whitley, and four new warehouse units have gone up at Reading International Logistics Park, by M4 junction 11. Reading Buses runs 173 buses, and its sister companies Thames Valley Buses and Newbury & District run more. Once you qualify, we offer introductions to our employer network.

Q: Is there funded lorry or bus training in Reading?

Skills Bootcamps in Berkshire are funded locally, and the courses on offer change each funding round, so whether an HGV or bus course is open to you depends on where you live and when you apply. Bootcamps are free for eligible adults. Our funding page covers other routes too, such as Level 2 driving qualifications, which are free for adults who are unemployed or on a lower income.

Q: What is the difference between a Category D and D1 licence?

Category D1 restricts you to driving minibuses (up to 16 passengers). A full Category D licence is completely unrestricted, allowing you to drive any size bus, coach, or bendy-bus.

Q: Do I need a special medical for a bus licence?

You need the exact same D4 medical as an HGV driver. We handle the booking for you with an approved local physician.

Q: Can I drive a manual bus if I pass in an automatic?

Yes, provided you already hold a manual car licence (Category B). If you pass your PCV test in an automatic bus, you are still legally allowed to drive manual buses.

Q: What kind of jobs can I get with a PCV licence?

You can work for local public transport networks (like Arriva or Stagecoach), private luxury coach hire companies, airport transfer services, or school transit providers.

Q: Is the Driver CPC required for driving a bus?

Yes, anyone driving a bus or coach professionally must hold a valid Driver CPC. We include full preparation for your Initial CPC in your training.

Q: How long is the training?

The timeline is similar to HGVs: typically 5 to 7 weeks from your initial medical to your final practical test, depending heavily on DVLA processing times.
