Course Overview & local Relevance

Your Class 2 training is one-to-one in a full-size vehicle and planned around your DVSA test. For learners in Reading, we confirm the training centre and test centre before you book, and every DVSA test fee is included in the price.

Reading is served by three M4 junctions, 10 to 12, and the A33 relief road links the motorway to the town's inner distribution road. Tesco runs a large distribution centre in Whitley, south Reading, on the site of the old Heineken brewery, and four new warehouse units have gone up at Reading International Logistics Park, by junction 11.

The Class 2 (Category C) licence is the backbone of local haulage. Whether you are delivering to supermarkets, construction sites, or retail stores, the Class 2 qualification offers steady work, competitive pay, and the benefit of being home every night. Our training uses modern automatic vehicles, ensuring you learn on the same technology used by the UK's leading fleets.

We support Class 2 learners across Caversham, Tilehurst, Whitley, Earley, Woodley, Calcot and the wider Berkshire area.

Class 2 Training in Reading - FAQs

Q: What driving work is there around Reading?

Tesco runs a 900,000 sq ft distribution centre in Whitley, and four new warehouse units have gone up at Reading International Logistics Park, by M4 junction 11. Reading Buses runs 173 buses, and its sister companies Thames Valley Buses and Newbury & District run more. Once you qualify, we offer introductions to our employer network.

Q: Is there funded lorry or bus training in Reading?

Skills Bootcamps in Berkshire are funded locally, and the courses on offer change each funding round, so whether an HGV or bus course is open to you depends on where you live and when you apply. Bootcamps are free for eligible adults. Our funding page covers other routes too, such as Level 2 driving qualifications, which are free for adults who are unemployed or on a lower income.

Q: How much does HGV training cost in Reading?

Our pricing page lists every course and what it covers. Reading training is arranged with a partner school near you, so we confirm your full all-in price in writing, DVSA test fees included, before you pay anything. On the Full Package we also book your D4 medical at an approved clinic near your home.

Q: What exactly is a Class 2 (Category C) vehicle?

A Class 2 vehicle is a "rigid" truck where the cab and the trailer are permanently fixed together. This includes vehicles like fire engines, bin lorries, tipper trucks, and large box vans used for store deliveries.

Q: Can I drive an articulated lorry with this licence?

No. To drive an articulated lorry (where the trailer pivots behind the cab), you need a Class 1 (C+E) licence. However, getting your Class 2 is an excellent stepping stone, and you can easily upgrade to Class 1 later in your career.

Q: How much can I earn as a Class 2 driver?

Newly qualified Class 2 drivers typically start on £30,000 to £35,000 per year. Because these roles often involve local routes and multi-drop deliveries, the hours are usually very regular, allowing you to be home every evening.

Q: Do I need a Driver CPC for Class 2?

Yes. If you are driving an HGV for commercial purposes (to earn money), the Driver CPC is a legal requirement. Our training packages include full preparation for your Initial CPC modules.

Q: Will I learn in a manual or automatic truck?

You will train and test in a modern automatic rigid truck. Due to DVLA rule changes, passing in an automatic still gives you the legal entitlement to drive manual Class 2 vehicles.

Q: How long does the training take?

From your initial medical to passing your practical test, the process usually takes 5 to 7 weeks. The longest part of the process is simply waiting for the DVLA to return your provisional licence.
