Not everyone booking time in a lorry wants a career out of it. Some people have wanted to drive a truck since they were eight. Others are seriously considering the licence and want to sit in the cab before spending thousands. An experience session covers both, and you do not need any licence to do one.
You spend time with an instructor in a real, full-size vehicle — not a simulator and not a cut-down trainer. A typical session starts with a walkaround so you understand what you are looking at, then moves to the wheel.
Most of the driving is done off public road on a private manoeuvring area, which is what makes it possible without a provisional vocational entitlement. You get the size, the mirrors, the air brakes and the sheer physical difference of a vehicle that weighs as much as a house.
A full car licence and something to prove who you are. You do not need a provisional lorry or bus entitlement, and you do not need a medical.
Sensible footwear, and glasses if you wear them for driving. That is genuinely it.
This is the underrated use. An HGV course is a real amount of money, and the honest truth is that a small number of people discover, once they are in the seat, that the size of the vehicle bothers them more than they expected.
Far better to find that out in an afternoon than three days into a course. And most people have the opposite reaction — the nerves go within twenty minutes and they book the licence on the way home.
