An HGV licence costs more than most people have spare at once, so it is common to look at finance. This guide explains the ways to spread or reduce the cost, what to check before you sign a credit agreement, and the funding routes worth ruling out first, because free money beats borrowed money.
Before taking finance, rule out the routes that could pay for some or all of your training. In England these include Skills Bootcamps where one runs in your area, a Level 2 driving qualification through the Adult Skills Fund if you are unemployed or earning under £25,750, Jobcentre Plus funding if you claim Universal Credit, apprenticeships through an employer, and ELCAS for eligible service leavers.
Each route has its own rules, and none is automatic. Our free HGV training guide explains who qualifies for each one and how to check.
With a finance agreement, a lender pays the training school and you repay the lender in instalments. It is a credit agreement, so approval depends on the lender's checks, and the cost of borrowing is set out in the agreement before you sign.
At HGV Training Hub you can secure your place with a £299 deposit, and payment plans are available through Snap Finance, subject to status. Finance is optional and never pushed: it is there if it helps you start sooner.
Some hauliers and bus companies pay for training for new drivers. In return they may ask you to stay for a set period, or to repay part of the cost if you leave early, so read the terms. HMRC's National Minimum Wage guidance says that where training is a requirement of the job, a charge to you for it counts against your pay when checking you were paid at least the minimum wage.
Yes, some training schools offer finance through a lender. At HGV Training Hub you can secure your place with a £299 deposit and spread the cost through Snap Finance, subject to status.
It depends on the lender. Every application is subject to status, and the lender makes the decision, not the training school. If finance is not an option, check the government funding routes in our free HGV training guide.
If you qualify for a funded route that runs near you, it is usually worth applying first, because it can cover the full cost. Funded places can have waiting lists and eligibility rules, so if you do not qualify or cannot wait, finance lets you start sooner.
At HGV Training Hub a £299 deposit secures your place. Your training centre, test centre, dates and full price are confirmed in writing before you pay anything.
