Course Overview & local Relevance

Your Class 2 training is one-to-one in a full-size vehicle and planned around your DVSA test. For learners in Bedford, we confirm the training centre and test centre before you book, and every DVSA test fee is included in the price.

Bedford sits where the A6 meets the A421, which runs west to Milton Keynes and M1 junction 13 and east to the A1, with the A428 skirting the town. Asda, Argos and Sainsbury's have distribution centres at Marsh Leys in Kempston, and Universal got permission in December 2025 to start building its UK resort near Stewartby, with completion expected in 2031.

The Class 2 (Category C) licence is the backbone of local haulage. Whether you are delivering to supermarkets, construction sites, or retail stores, the Class 2 qualification offers steady work, competitive pay, and the benefit of being home every night. Our training uses modern automatic vehicles, ensuring you learn on the same technology used by the UK's leading fleets.

We support Class 2 learners across Kempston, Biddenham, Bromham, Elstow, Wixams, Wilstead and the wider Bedfordshire area.

Class 2 Training in Bedford - FAQs

Q: Is there lorry work around Bedford?

Yes. Asda, Argos and Sainsbury's have distribution centres at Marsh Leys in Kempston, beside the A421. Universal has permission to build its UK resort near Stewartby, with completion expected in 2031, and a new A421 link road is part of the upgrades. Once you qualify, we offer introductions to our employer network.

Q: Can I get funded bus driver training in Bedford?

Central Bedfordshire Council offers free Category D bus licence training to Bedford Borough residents who hold a car licence, delivered by a separate provider. Bedford and Central Bedfordshire also share £1.5m of Skills Bootcamp funding for 2026/27 covering transport and logistics, but an HGV course is not confirmed. Our funding page has more.

Q: How much does lorry or bus training cost from Bedford?

Every course price is on our pricing page, and DVSA test fees are included. We confirm the full all-in price in writing before you pay anything, along with the training centre, test centre and dates, so you can compare like for like.

Q: What exactly is a Class 2 (Category C) vehicle?

A Class 2 vehicle is a "rigid" truck where the cab and the trailer are permanently fixed together. This includes vehicles like fire engines, bin lorries, tipper trucks, and large box vans used for store deliveries.

Q: Can I drive an articulated lorry with this licence?

No. To drive an articulated lorry (where the trailer pivots behind the cab), you need a Class 1 (C+E) licence. However, getting your Class 2 is an excellent stepping stone, and you can easily upgrade to Class 1 later in your career.

Q: How much can I earn as a Class 2 driver?

Newly qualified Class 2 drivers typically start on £30,000 to £35,000 per year. Because these roles often involve local routes and multi-drop deliveries, the hours are usually very regular, allowing you to be home every evening.

Q: Do I need a Driver CPC for Class 2?

Yes. If you are driving an HGV for commercial purposes (to earn money), the Driver CPC is a legal requirement. Our training packages include full preparation for your Initial CPC modules.

Q: Will I learn in a manual or automatic truck?

You will train and test in a modern automatic rigid truck. Due to DVLA rule changes, passing in an automatic still gives you the legal entitlement to drive manual Class 2 vehicles.

Q: How long does the training take?

From your initial medical to passing your practical test, the process usually takes 5 to 7 weeks. The longest part of the process is simply waiting for the DVLA to return your provisional licence.
