Course Overview & local Relevance

Your Class 2 training is one-to-one in a full-size vehicle and planned around your DVSA test. For learners in Southampton, we confirm the training centre and test centre before you book, and every DVSA test fee is included in the price.

Southampton is a port city first. ABP describes it as the UK's number one vehicle handling port, processing 600,000 vehicles a year, DP World runs the five-berth Southampton Container Terminal, and the port offers 23 container trains a day.

The Class 2 (Category C) licence is the backbone of local haulage. Whether you are delivering to supermarkets, construction sites, or retail stores, the Class 2 qualification offers steady work, competitive pay, and the benefit of being home every night. Our training uses modern automatic vehicles, ensuring you learn on the same technology used by the UK's leading fleets.

We support Class 2 learners across Eastleigh, Totton, Hedge End, Botley, Chandler's Ford, Woolston and the wider Hampshire area.

Class 2 Training in Southampton - FAQs

Q: Is there driving work around Southampton's docks?

The port moves a lot of freight: ABP describes Southampton as the UK's number one vehicle handling port, with 600,000 vehicles a year, and DP World runs the container terminal, served by 23 container trains a day. ABP says the port supports 45,600 jobs. Once you qualify, we offer introductions to our employer network.

Q: Can I get funding for HGV training in Southampton?

Possibly, depending on your circumstances. Skills Bootcamps are run by local areas in 2026/27, so what is on offer depends on where you live, and some routes are free for eligible adults. Our funding page sets out each route.

Q: How is training priced for Southampton?

You can see course prices on our pricing page. For the Southampton area we confirm your full all-in price in writing, DVSA test fees included, along with the school, test centre and dates, before you pay anything. The Full Package also covers booking your D4 medical at an approved clinic near your home.

Q: What exactly is a Class 2 (Category C) vehicle?

A Class 2 vehicle is a "rigid" truck where the cab and the trailer are permanently fixed together. This includes vehicles like fire engines, bin lorries, tipper trucks, and large box vans used for store deliveries.

Q: Can I drive an articulated lorry with this licence?

No. To drive an articulated lorry (where the trailer pivots behind the cab), you need a Class 1 (C+E) licence. However, getting your Class 2 is an excellent stepping stone, and you can easily upgrade to Class 1 later in your career.

Q: How much can I earn as a Class 2 driver?

Newly qualified Class 2 drivers typically start on £30,000 to £35,000 per year. Because these roles often involve local routes and multi-drop deliveries, the hours are usually very regular, allowing you to be home every evening.

Q: Do I need a Driver CPC for Class 2?

Yes. If you are driving an HGV for commercial purposes (to earn money), the Driver CPC is a legal requirement. Our training packages include full preparation for your Initial CPC modules.

Q: Will I learn in a manual or automatic truck?

You will train and test in a modern automatic rigid truck. Due to DVLA rule changes, passing in an automatic still gives you the legal entitlement to drive manual Class 2 vehicles.

Q: How long does the training take?

From your initial medical to passing your practical test, the process usually takes 5 to 7 weeks. The longest part of the process is simply waiting for the DVLA to return your provisional licence.
